Workshop: Trends and digital innovations applied to the wine sector

We had the pleasure of showcasing Deep Planet's VineSignal platform to growers from Douro at a workshop organized by ADVID CoLAB Vines and Wines on May 26th. Titled "Days in the Vineyard": Trends and digital innovations applied to the wine sector, the workshop brought together six innovative solutions, including our VineSignal platform, to educate growers about the latest developments in agritech. This event not only provided us with an opportunity to demonstrate our platform but also allowed us to gather valuable feedback and address growers' questions.

During the workshop, we conducted a live demo of VineSignal, giving growers an immersive experience and deeper insights into how our tools can support their vineyard work. We want to share some highlights from the event with those who were unable to attend in person.

One aspect of VineSignal that garnered significant attention from attendees was our harvest logistics tools. These tools address crucial questions for growers each season: When to harvest? Where to harvest? And what productivity to expect? By leveraging satellite imagery, weather data, environmental factors, and historical crop agronomy data, VineSignal's harvest tools provide reliable predictions and easy-to-interpret variability maps. Feedback from producers who have utilised these tools in their decision-making process reveals cost savings of €2-€20 per bottle of wine produced, along with improved profitability, logistics, and reduced stress for growers and winemakers. We are currently collaborating with one of Portugal's largest producers to trial these tools and tailor them to the specific needs of the Portuguese market.

The interactive nature of the workshop encouraged attendees to ask questions. We've noticed that certain questions are common among growers and producers we engage with, so we'd like to address them here:

  1. How do you know it works? - We have over 85,000 hectares of vineyards already utilising the platform, and we continually refine and enhance our tools based on user feedback.

  2. Will it work in the context of Portugal? - Although we are new to Portugal, we have already partnered with Portuguese growers, actively seeking their feedback to adapt the tools to their unique requirements and ensure region-specific adjustments.

  3. What kind of data do you use in your models? - Our models leverage satellite imagery, weather data, historical and crop agronomy data, and information from in-field sensors to generate accurate and reliable predictions.

  4. How do you determine which tools to develop? - The answer is simple: We maintain ongoing communication with growers worldwide to understand their greatest needs and challenges. This enables us to create technology solutions that effectively address these issues, resulting in a comprehensive arsenal of tools available through VineSignal.

Engaging directly with growers, presenting our platform, and receiving their feedback has been an incredibly rewarding experience. It's gratifying to know that our creations and ongoing development align with growers' needs and will bring them tangible benefits. One attendee remarked on the courage it takes for Deep Planet to create a platform that addresses all the aspects and pain points of viticulture that growers face. It's true; this is no easy task. However, through our partnerships with growers and our customer-centric approach, we are committed to delivering on our promises and creating tools that empower growers to make confident decisions, enhance productivity, efficiency, and sustainability.

We extend a heartfelt thank you to ADVID for organising the workshop and to the magnificent Quinta da Pacheca for hosting it. When we initially approached ADVID a few months ago with the idea of demonstrating to growers how they can utilise VineSignal's advanced tools to improve vineyard management efficiency and sustainability, their warm response was truly delightful. Collaborating with them to bring our technology to growers in Douro has been a fantastic experience, and we eagerly anticipate future collaborations.
